Welding and Metal Fabrication

Explore metal cutting, joining, fabrication techniques and workshop safety.

What you will learn

  • Measuring, marking out and cutting metal accurately
  • Preparing and clamping a joint so it welds well
  • Striking and holding an arc
  • Running a bead, and reading it to see what went wrong
  • Fillet and butt joints in different positions

Tools you will handle

  • Arc welding plant, electrodes and holders
  • Angle grinder with cutting and grinding discs
  • Clamps, magnets and fabrication jigs

  • Chipping hammer and wire brush

By the end of the course

Strike and run a bead

Consistent, controlled welds on flat plate.

Fabricate something real

Cut, prepare, weld and finish a small frame you take home.

Inspect your own work

Spot undercut, porosity and lack of fusion in your own beads.

Safety first

Nobody touches a tool before the induction.

Every learner completes a safety induction on day one and works under supervision throughout. Protective equipment is issued at the start of the course.

  • Arc eye — why the visor goes down every single time
  • Fume extraction and ventilation
  • Fire watch, hot metal and where sparks travel
  • Angle grinder discipline: guards, discs and stance
  • Full PPE is mandatory for this course, no exceptions

What you go home with

Learners who complete the course and meet the attendance requirement receive an EILA certificate of completion, signed by the principal. Each certificate carries a QR code, so a school, college or employer can verify it instantly.

How you are assessed

Practical work is judged on what you can actually do, not on an exam paper. Your instructor rates each competency as you progress, and those ratings decide whether you are signed off for a certificate.
