Masonry and Tiling

Learn the fundamentals of working with masonry materials, surfaces, tiling and finishing.

What you will learn

  • Reading a simple setting-out and marking it on the ground
  • Mixing mortar to the right consistency, and why it matters
  • Laying blocks level, plumb and to a line
  • Preparing and truing a surface before tiling
  • Setting out tiles so the cuts fall where nobody looks
  • Cutting tiles, grouting and finishing edges cleanly

Tools you will handle

  • Trowel, float and spirit level
  • Line and pins, plumb bob, square
  • Tile cutter and tile nippers
  • Notched adhesive trowel and grout float
  • Mixing tools and gauging equipment

By the end of the course

Set out and build

You will have built a small block wall and tiled a panel from bare surface to grouted finish.

Judge quality

You will be able to look at a tiled wall and say what was done well and what was rushed.

Work to a line

Level, plumb and square stop being words and start being habits.

Safety first

Nobody touches a tool before the induction.

Every learner completes a safety induction on day one and works under supervision throughout. Protective equipment is issued at the start of the course.

  • Cement burns — gloves and correct handling of wet mortar
  • Safe use of the tile cutter and eye protection when cutting
  • Lifting technique for blocks and bags
  • Keeping a tidy, trip-free work area

What you go home with

Learners who complete the course and meet the attendance requirement receive an EILA certificate of completion, signed by the principal. Each certificate carries a QR code, so a school, college or employer can verify it instantly.

How you are assessed

Practical work is judged on what you can actually do, not on an exam paper. Your instructor rates each competency as you progress, and those ratings decide whether you are signed off for a certificate.
